Saturday, October 12th
Doors Open: 11:00 AM
Conversation: 1:00-2:00 PM

Have you organized punk shows? Do you like attending them? What’s been difficult in your experience, and are the challenges still the same?

Join us for a community conversation exploring the ever-evolving punk scene, where the voices of seasoned punks and eager newcomers collide. We’ll delve into growing up in neighborhoods like Little Village versus Humboldt Park or the suburbs, and encourage younger punks to ask their burning questions of the older generation. Explore the richness of DIY culture, exchange ideas, and spark connections with others who share a passion for music!

Special guests include Soli Herrera (Founder + Creative Director for Ruidosa Art Collective), Benny Hernandez, and Brian Herrera (Artist and 2024 Community Storyteller for Ask A Punk film).

About Artists

Teresita Carson (b. Mexico) is an artist working across disciplines, including moving image, new media, sound, and installation. Taking an irreverent feminist approach to world and counter-archive building, she explores the abstract intersection between the historical, the speculative, indigenous cosmogonies, and magical peripheries. She has screened experimental films internationally notably at the Slamdance Film Festival, the Chicago Underground Film Festival, Light Matter Film Festival, Festival Internacional de Cine con Medios Alternativos, Antimatter, Experiments in Cinema, and at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Recent venues presenting Carson’s work include Mana Contemporary, Sullivan Galleries, Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (CICA Museum), Hyde Park Art Center, Gallery 400 and the Cleve Carney Museum of Art. She resides in Chicago, Illinois in the land of the Three Fires Confederacy, Potawatomi, Odawa and Ojibwe Nations.

AWXEL (They/Them/Theirs) is a non-binary trans-disciplinary Latinx artist/ performer working with themes of family ancestry, Latinx diaspora, ceremonial aesthetics, knowledge de-centralization, Queerness, and Drag.

Martín Sorrondeguy was born in Montevideo, Uruguay and was raised most of his life in Chicago, Illinois. He has an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Martin was the lead singer of the Latino punk band named Los Crudos who toured the U.S., Mexico, Europe, Japan, and parts of South America.

Mony Kaos is a queer self taught artist from Chicago. They create an eclectic/chaotic style, from gay pornography, punk, and cartoons, through various available mediums.

Clada Idem My work depicts the harsh truth making my pieces are all relatable. They continue a conversation that was started or added to by other artists. I find new names every day to add to the visual discourse I have become a part of, it is constantly evolving, just like our lives. I use painting and drawing to depict my contribution. So I ask my viewer - What do you wish to do with your time?

Andy Krysiak (he/him) is an independent film director, screenwriter, and producer based in Chicago. Drawing from a wide array of influences, he is interested in oppressive power systems, social constructs and relations, the ethics and democratization of art, the struggle for individualism, and the absurdities of political discourse. In June 2024, Andy launched Next Exit Films, a formal outlet to share his own creative work across multiple disciplines all while championing fellow creative independents whose work inspire and innovate. He is currently working to develop a new Chicago-based film festival designed by and for young, amateur and DIY filmmakers in search of their audience, and hopes to produce his first feature-length film project in 2025.

Alex Smith I'm Alex! I grew up in Rhode Island but have called Chicago home for about 5 years. I'm an Emergency Room Physician Assistant, and usually spend the rest of my time painting and going to punk/emo shows (shoutouts to my local favorites - Sincere Engineer and Knuckle Puck).

Fernando Ruiz

Daria Lahn has explored many types of media through which to express herself. The inspiration for many of her pieces have come from life experiences as well as from other artists. Although not a musician she is deeply moved by the lyrics, melodies and performances of her favorite bands. Like many artists, she puts her heart and soul in her work. Daria hopes others who struggle can connect with her pieces. To feel like they are not alone, to find meaning or hope when the universe is telling them otherwise. She has a passion for giving objects (and people) a second, third and at times a fourth chance. She feels in this vast universe of ours there is a purpose for every object and person; one must keep trying to find that. Successes are just as valuable as failures; both serve a purpose in her life, and she is grateful to have both in her life. Follow her work at darialahn.com.
